Program Introduction

Egypt Study Travel Course 2008-2009

This exceptional Marymount program is an inter-disciplinary, team-taught course that will provide you with first-hand experiences as well as academic content to deepen your understanding of other cultures-and your own!  The course will provide a comprehensive orientation to Egypt, from geography, ecology and ancient history to contemporary culture, addressing topics including art and architecture, religions and philosophy, issues in social change, and economic and political development.

This program is arranged in two separate, yet complementary sessions: Fall Semester Class ID 180D and Two Weeks of Study Travel to Egypt in January 09   During the Fall semester session and our travel in Egypt, you have ample opportunity to participate in group study sessions, reflections, discussion and lectures-both on campus and in Egypt and to make exciting discoveries on your own through excursions to historic and modern sites.  The program offers a chance t learn about the origins and development of civilization, not just through intellectual discourse, but directly- you will walk through 5000 years of history, from Pharaonic times through Judeo-Christian, Islamic, and colonial times, and right up the present!

Highlights of the trip include the famous Pyramids and Sphinx at Giza- "one of the seven wonders of the ancient world-" historic monasteries and mosques, world class museums, and a four day Nile cruise with stops including the awe-inspiring temples of Abu-Simbel and tombs of Luxor. You will follow the path of Exodus to Mount Sinai, then stay at the beach-front resort of Sharm el Sheikh and snorkel in the vibrant reefs of the Red Sea. You will also have the opportunity to meet Egyptian college students and explore modern day Egyptian culture.

An extraordinary experience awaits those who sign on for the course! For more information, please feel free to contact us!
